What
is Meningitis and Septicaemia?
Meningitis and Septicaemia are very dangerous diseases and can kill in
hours.
Meningitis means swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
Septicaemia is blood poisoning caused by the same germs. They can occur
together or seperately.
Every year as many as 3,000 people are affected in the UK and Ireland.
Sadly, one in ten will die and many others will be left with after effects
which could be as severe as brain damage, deafness and amputations. |

Meningitis and septicaemia
can affect anyone of any age, but babies, children and young adults are
at particular risk. The diseases kill more children in the UK and Ireland
than any other infectious disease. |
The Meningitis Reaserch
Foundation is a national registered charity (Charity No. 1091105) that
fights death and disability from meningitis and septicaemia, and supports
people affected by these diseases. The Foundation funds vital scientific
research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and
septicaemia, raises awareness of the diseases, and offers support through
in-depth information and befriending. They rely on voluntary support to
fund this vital work. |
